My...I was very young when I first heard this word. My gramma had a strange plant she said was an asafoetida plant. I loved the name. My gran told me that folks used to wear it around their necks to prevent colds. Her reasoning was like yours, it smelled so bad, you couldn't get close enough to catch one. <br />My husband cooks Indian food and uses asafoetida in powdered form.
